The place

A railway story you can step into

The original 78-kilometre railway opened in 1896 and closed in 1962. An eight-kilometre section between Grovane and Røyknes was preserved, retaining the 1,067 mm gauge and a collection of locomotives and carriages associated with Norway's narrow-gauge network.

A journey here is as much about the railway environment as the train. Stations, workshops, track and lineside details frame the steam locomotive and wooden carriages as parts of a working historical system.

What you can experience

Look closer

  1. 01

Steam-hauled journeys between Grovane and Røyknes

Steam locomotives work over an original section of railway, with the sound, pace and labour of narrow-gauge traction forming the centre of the journey.

  2. 02

Historic wooden carriages on the original narrow gauge

The wooden carriages preserve the passenger scale of the old line, from their compact bodies to the interiors and ride created by the 1,067 mm gauge.

  3. 03

Stations, workshops and railway equipment along the preserved line

Grovane, Røyknes, workshops and lineside equipment keep the railway environment around the train. The visit can therefore be explored at the stations as well as from a seat.

History

A valley railway saved almost immediately after closure

Setesdalsbanen linked Kristiansand with inland communities and lake transport at Byglandsfjord. The preserved line is historically important not only for its 1,067 mm gauge, but because local railway supporters began saving it within months of the final ordinary train.

  1. Parliamentary approval and opening

The Storting approved the railway in 1890, and the 78-kilometre line between Kristiansand and Byglandsfjord opened in 1896. Steamships at Byglandsfjord extended the transport chain farther into Setesdal. 12

  2. Grovane becomes a break-of-gauge station

When standard-gauge Sørlandsbanen reached Kristiansand, the southern part of Setesdalsbanen was displaced. Passengers and goods had to transfer between standard-gauge trains and the 1,067 mm valley railway at Grovane. 2

  3. The last ordinary train

After a closure decision in 1960, the final ordinary train ran on 2 September 1962. Most of the railway was dismantled, but the section north from Grovane became the basis for preservation. 12

  4. Norway's first preserved railway begins

Setesdalsbanens Hobbyklubb was founded in October 1963, and the first veteran train ran in June 1964. The rapid response made Setesdalsbanen a pioneer of operating railway preservation in Norway. 2

  5. The museum railway reaches Røyknes

Reconstruction extended the preserved railway to Røyknes, creating today's eight-kilometre route from Grovane and returning more of the original valley alignment to use. 12

Getting there

The museum railway starts at Grovane in Vennesla, north of Kristiansand. Use the official visitor page for the current access, parking and boarding arrangements rather than assuming a mainline train connection.

Planning context

Popular steam departures can fill, and the operating calendar is seasonal. Reserve enough time at the stations and consider advance tickets when the museum recommends them.
