Finse developed because Bergensbanen had to cross the high mountain plateau. Rallarmuseet tells two connected histories: the construction workforce that completed the line and the railway staff who have fought snow and weather ever since.
Keeping the line open becomes a continuous task
Snow clearance demanded large amounts of labour from the first years of operation. Rotary ploughs, scrapers and other specialised equipment became as central to Finse's railway story as the original construction work. 1
The locomotive shed becomes a high-mountain museum
Rallarmuseet occupies the eastern locomotive shed at Finse. Its collection includes construction history, snow-clearing equipment, a navvy hut and forge, while Fagernut lengthman's cottage on Rallarvegen forms part of the museum. 1
