The place

A railway story you can step into

Museet Gamle Vossebanen preserves a section of the 1883 railway between Bergen and Voss. Its standard-gauge trains, stations and infrastructure present a complete railway environment rather than a collection separated from the line where it belongs.

Garnes is the principal museum station, with rolling stock, railway buildings and an exhibition. On running days, a steam locomotive and historic teak carriages carry passengers along the preserved route towards Midttun.

The eighteen-kilometre run passes railway engineering closely fitted between water, steep ground and settlements, revealing why the original alignment remains worth experiencing from a carriage window.

History

The 1883 railway between Bergen and Voss, preserved on its old route

Gamle Vossebanen is not a reconstructed tourist line. It operates over part of the original Bergen–Voss railway, preserving the relationship between main-line rolling stock, stations, track and a route engineered through difficult western terrain.

  1. The railway between Bergen and Voss opens

Bergen–Vossbanen opened on 11 July 1883. It was built to the Norwegian narrow gauge and later became the western foundation of the route known as Bergensbanen. 23

  2. The line changes to standard gauge

The western railway was converted to standard gauge as work advanced on the trans-mountain connection. That rebuilding allowed it to form part of the through railway between Bergen and eastern Norway. 34

  3. A new route bypasses the old section

The opening of the Ulriken tunnel and the new Arna route shifted main-line traffic away from much of the old alignment. Ordinary passenger use of the preserved section ended in 1965. 4

  4. Museum railway preservation begins

Organised preservation established Garnes as the operating base and returned historic trains to the old line. The museum railway now runs eighteen kilometres between Garnes and Midttun. 14

  5. The historic railway receives legal protection

The 21.4-kilometre railway environment between Tunestveit and Midttun was formally protected, including track, stations and associated infrastructure from the original Vossebanen. 2

Getting there

Heritage trains begin at Garnes rather than Bergen's central station. Plan the local bus or road connection to Garnes and arrive early enough to see the station exhibition before departure.

Planning context

This is one of the longer, more complete heritage-railway experiences in the collection. Different dates may add a dining car, railcar, bus or boat connection, so build the day around the operator's exact programme.

Plan your visit

Check before you travel

Passenger trains run on selected seasonal dates. Check the official timetable and departure information before travelling to Garnes or another station on the line.
