The place

A railway story you can step into

Bergens Tekniske Museum is a volunteer-run meeting place for several technical heritage collections. The tram hall and its vehicles anchor the public-transport story, while other exhibits broaden the visit into machinery, road transport and industrial history.

The museum is also the home base for Bergen's heritage tram. On operating days, the relationship between museum, depot and street railway becomes tangible as a preserved car leaves the hall for the city centre.

Historic Bergen tramway vehicles inside the former Møhlenpris depot

Historic tramcars and equipment make the former Bergen system the anchor of the hall, with the depot architecture preserving the practical setting around the vehicles.

Transport and technical collections maintained by specialist volunteer groups

Buses, mechanical exhibits and specialist collections extend the visit into Bergen's wider technical and industrial history without losing the transport focus.

Museumstrikken starts outside the hall on operating days. The departure turns the museum from a destination into the beginning of a moving journey through the city.

History

The depot that outlived Bergen's first tram network

The former tram depot at Møhlenpris links Bergen's present technical museum directly to the city's original electric tramway. The building survived the closure of that network and later became the working base for several volunteer collections.

  1. Bergen's electric tramway opens

Electric trams began carrying passengers in Bergen on 3 July 1897. The new system changed movement through the growing city and established the transport history now represented in the museum. 2

  2. The tramway reaches Møhlenpris

The Møhlenpris line opened on 1 July 1911. A new depot followed in 1913, becoming the principal base for the city's tram fleet and later the building occupied by Bergens Tekniske Museum. 2

  3. Tram service to Møhlenpris ends

The tram route serving Møhlenpris ended on 24 February 1950 as Bergen shifted parts of its public transport towards trolleybuses. The depot continued to serve the wider transport undertaking. 2

  4. The old city tramway closes

Bergen's final ordinary tram ran on 31 December 1965. Preserving vehicles and the Møhlenpris depot later made it possible to interpret a system that had otherwise disappeared from the streets. 2

  5. A shared home for working technical heritage

The museum brings trams together with buses, machinery and other technical collections. It also serves as the depot and workshop behind Bergen's restored heritage tramway. 13

Getting there

The museum is at Thormøhlens gate 23 on Møhlenpris, within walking and local-transit distance of central Bergen. Museumstrikken provides a heritage connection to Engen when it is operating.

Planning context

Plan the museum and the heritage tram together, but check both programmes: opening days and tram operation can differ. The depot is also the best place to understand how the street-running project is maintained.
