The place

A railway story you can step into

The heritage tramway begins at the old depot on Møhlenpris and follows rebuilt track towards Engen in the city centre. Its preserved cars return historic urban transport to the streets rather than displaying it only inside a hall.

The operation is closely connected to Bergens Tekniske Museum, where the tram is stored and maintained. Together they show both sides of preservation: the vehicle collection in the depot and the experience of a tram moving through the city it was built to serve.

The tramcars are maintained at the former depot, making the workshops and collection at Bergens Tekniske Museum the practical base behind the public journey.

History

The tramway Bergen lost — and rebuilt towards the city centre

Bergens Elektriske Sporvei preserves the original electric tram tradition rather than the modern Bybanen system. Its volunteers restored vehicles, track and overhead power from the old Møhlenpris depot, gradually returning a historic tram presence to Bergen's streets.

  1. Electric trams begin running in Bergen

The city's first electric tram service opened on 3 July 1897. Over the following decades, the network became a familiar part of daily movement through Bergen. 1

  2. The line and depot reach Møhlenpris

Trams began serving Møhlenpris in July 1911. The depot opened in 1913 and later survived as both a technical museum and the working base for the heritage tramway. 13

  3. The first tram network disappears

Tram service on the Møhlenpris route ended in February 1950. Bergen's remaining original tram routes closed on 31 December 1965, leaving the city without that historic street-railway system. 1

  4. Vehicles and infrastructure return to working order

Volunteers restored historic tramcars and built an operating line out from the old depot. The project required track, power supply and street interfaces as well as the vehicles themselves. 23

  5. Museumstrikken reaches Engen

The completed extension to Engen was officially opened on 28 September 2024. Historic cars can now travel from Møhlenpris into central Bergen on selected operating days. 2
